I hear a lot about affirmations these days. I see a lot of challenges on IG, FB, and of course TikTok. We talk often about self care days and being proud of who we are. And boy o boy are affirmations the hot topic. We also speak often when we have black girls about telling them they are beautiful. But my question is do we affirm the little black girls we don’t know, I mean the ones that may not get that affirmation at home. Or the ones that would love to hear a compliment from someone other than their parents (that was me). You may ask how do I go about doing that? The answer is simple and easy. We do a challenge even in the age of quarantine this is a very easy challenge! HERE IT GOES! Tell random black girls you see at the grocery store or the gas station, anywhere for that matter, these 10 words: Wow you are so beautiful and your skin is gorgeous! We will do this challenge for all of January and February and I want to get feedback on the looks on their faces, their responses, and how it made you feel. I can’t wait to hear your affirmation challenge stories. After this challenge I’m postitive we will quickly realize how important it is to normalize affirming our black children any chance we get. So LETS GET THIS CHALLENGE STARTED!!!

In these times we live in, it is especially important that we affirm and reaffirm our black children. The first person to let our children know that they are smart, talented, and beautiful should be us, the parents, relatives and our community at large. Dads need to reinforce the love they have for and beauty they see, especially in their daughters.
I agree that speaking the beauty you see in their skin kissed by melanin will stir up the positive images and self affirmation our babies need!
